Happy Birthday, George Harrison. He would have been 69 today.

Me too, Charlie. Me too.

This is part of the fun of growing older: being out of touch and not caring. Teenagers might not know The Beatles, and my revenge is to not know…come to think of it, I don’t even know who I’m supposed to not know!

Here’s a Beatles/Ramones mashup by Mighty Mike called “For No Bop” combining “For No One” and “Blitzkrieg Bop”

You Never Give Me Your Money

The genius of Lennon’s and McCartney’s songwriting is unquestionable, but the melodies and the vocals are what always got me. Just listen to the beautiful harmonies on the isolated vocal track of the first section of the Abbey Road medley (“You Never Give Me Your Money,” “Sun King,” “Mean Mr. Mustard,” and “She Came In Through the Bathroom Window”).

You can hear the other isolated tracks at beattalesForo’s YouTube Channel.

This is just too stupid. Sheesh.

Thanks for the heads-up, Jay.

And I Will Sing A Lullaby

I stumbled onto these isolated tracks of the second section of the Abbey Road medley (“Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight,” “The End,” and “Her Majesty”) today thanks in part to this post by Merlin Mann. There’s more to enjoy at the beattalesForo YouTube Channel.

Enjoy!

Live Soul

Soulive performs “Eleanor Rigby” and “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” at the Brooklyn Bowl for the upcoming BOWLIVE DVD

As a bona fide music nerd and Bealtes fan, jazz/funk/soul/swing reworkings of classic Beatles tunes sounds very interesting to me. If the rest of Soulive’s covers are as good as these two, the soon-to-be released BOWLIVE DVD should be worth a watch.

Go read Popdose’s review of the recently released Rubber Soulive album, which is how I got hip to this in the first place. Based on the samples at Amazon, I would have to agree with the reviewer that this works much better in the context of a live performance.

For awhile there we were enjoying driving up in our car and being mobbed. Or we had to be secretly taken into the theater where we playing…It was a bit “Hard Day’s Night,” you know. Just for awhile, it was fun.

The Beatles are kind of my musical DNA. If I could sing like them, write like them, and make girls jump up and down and scream like they did, then I would never have to play instrumental music at all.
Anybody who questions the musicality of The Beatles, they’re just not paying attention.

Suite Charlotte Pike/Abbey Road Medley (4 Parts)

Remember way back when I encouraged you to search for prog supergroup Transatlantic’s performances of The Beatles’ Abbey Road medley? Well, I decided to go ahead and do the legwork for you.

This performance of “Suite Charlotte Pike” from the Bridge Across Forever album mixes in parts of the medley and features a pretty incredible bass solo from Marillion’s Pete Trewavas. Weighing in at about 30 minutes over 4 videos, it’s a fairly lengthy watch, but if you are a fan of progressive rock, The Beatles, supergroups, or bass solos, it’s definitely worth the investment of your time.
